There are a variety of bike trails in the Greater Williamsburg area, including trails within local parks and natural areas. Here are some of the most popular trails for biking.
Colonial Williamsburg
Bike through history as you pedal through Colonial Williamsburg. The Colonial Williamsburg and College of William & Mary area have paths perfect for biking, along with designated bike lanes. Travel through W&M’s beautifully landscaped campus, then through Merchants Square, before exploring Colonial Williamsburg’s historic sites.

Colonial Parkway
If you’re looking for a new way to explore the Historic Triangle, pedal along the Colonial Parkway. Maintained by the National Park Service, the Colonial Parkway runs 23 miles and connects Yorktown, Williamsburg and Jamestown Begin at the Yorktown Battlefield and ride along the York River to Williamsburg. Then, follow the James River to the end of the trail at Historic Jamestowne. There are several pull-off sites along the trail that offer scenic views and history.
Freedom Park
Find over 20 miles of mountain bike trails at Freedom Park in Jamestown. Freedom Park is a 600-acre public park and historic area. The trails within Freedom Park will take you through forested area, by recreated historic sites, along creeks and more.
Jamestown Island Loop Drive
Part of the Colonial Parkway trail, the Jamestown Island Loop Drive is a great way to explore the area’s natural setting. See many of the same sights that the early settlers encountered when they arrived in 1607. Island Loop Drive is a three/five-mile mixed-use trail, for bikers, pedestrians and some vehicles.
Virginia Capital Trail
The longest bike trail in the area, the Virginia Capital Trail runs 52 miles from Jamestown to Richmond. This trail is perfect for bikers of all abilities as it is paved. You’ll also find a number of walkers and runners utilizing the trail. Stops along the Virginia Capital Trail include Berkeley Plantation, Chickahominy Riverfront Park and Jamestown Settlement.
York River State Park
York River State Park boasts bike trails that range in difficulty and length. There are five trails designated for mountain bike use only, along with multi-use trails. A majority of York River State Park’s trails are easy, with lengths from 0.19–0.61 mile. The most challenging trail, the Marl Ravine Trail, is just over six miles that will offer a challenging and scenic ride.
