An Abundance of Accommodations in Greater Williamsburg

By Julie Matthews

No matter if you are traveling solo, as a couple or in a group, the Williamsburg area offers a large selection of accommodations, from affordable family friendly hotels to upscale resort packages to rustic outdoorsy options. Due to Greater Williamsburg’s amazing attractions and activities, many visitors choose where to stay based on what they will be doing while in town.

History Bound

Certainly, visitors are drawn to the Historic Triangle because of its rich history, and there are numerous lodging options convenient to Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. In the heart of Colonial Williamsburg, Colonial Williamsburg Resorts offers guests both convenience and luxury with five impressive accommodations: Williamsburg Inn; Williamsburg Lodge, Autograph Collection; Griffin Hotel; Colonial Houses; and Williamsburg Woodlands Hotel and Suites. Full of amenities and nearby are Hampton Inn & Suites Williamsburg Historic District, located just a half mile away from Colonial Williamsburg, and Hampton Inn & Suites Williamsburg-Richmond Rd., only a few miles away. Also conveniently located is Wingate by Wyndham Williamsburg, providing guests a comfortable stay near popular attractions in Williamsburg. For a more intimate lodging experience, Fife & Drum Inn is a quaint, private inn, centrally located in Merchants Square near the William & Mary campus.

Many remarkable accommodations are located outside of Williamsburg as well. In Historic Yorktown, Yorktown Beach Hotel offers incredible views of the York River and distinguishes itself as the only hotel on the Yorktown waterfront. The Wilton House, a 1763 Georgian Colonial House in Hartfield, Virginia, accommodates up to six guests for a one-of-a-kind stay on a historic plantation set on 25 acres.

Relaxation and Romance

Greater Williamsburg is the perfect destination for romantic getaways and friends’ trips. From charming historic inns to luxurious resorts, and everything in between, the area has plenty of opportunities for pampering yourself and loved ones. Spa lovers have plenty of options including The Spa of Colonial Williamsburg at Colonial Williamsburg Hotels and The Kingsmill Spa at Kingsmill Resort. Wine enthusiasts can stay overnight at Williamsburg Winery’s Wedmore Place, a European-style hotel, offering guests beautiful views throughout its 400 acres.

Family Friendly

Thrill seekers wanting to maximize their time at amusement parks, such as Busch Gardens, and waterparks like Water Country USA have a number of convenient accommodation options. However, it’s not possible to stay any closer to water fun than at Great Wolf Lodge, which literally has an indoor waterpark (as well as a bowling alley!) inside the lodge, making it a very popular destination for families year-round.

Outdoor Escape

Visitors wanting to immerse themselves in nature can stay at campgrounds such as Williamsburg Campground, which has been hosting guests in its camping community for 50 years. Conveniently located a couple of miles off of I-64, Williamsburg Campground has 370 sites on its 180 acres, accommodating a variety of guests, whether staying at campsites or in cabins or glamping in yurts. As another glamping option, at Timberline Glamping guests can stay at Chickahominy Riverfront Park in canvas tents furnished with beds, accent furniture and other décor.

Unique Experience

It’s no surprise that ghost tours are popular in the Historic Triangle. Visitors looking for accommodations that are linked with historic tales and haunted stories may wish to consider a stay at Fort Magruder Hotel and Conference Center, The Brick House Tavern and Edgewood Bed & Breakfast.

Wherever you decide to stay, Greater Williamsburg is loaded with accommodations and attractions to fit every visitor’s needs. For an Accommodations & Amenities directory listing, including accommodations that are pet friendly and have specific amenities like pools, see pages 90–91.
