Juneteenth 2026: A Centennial and Bicentennial Celebration of Freedom

In June 2026, Juneteenth in Colonial Williamsburg serves as a profound intersection of anniversaries. As the nation celebrates its 250th birthday and the Foundation marks its 100th year, the city offers a week-long commemoration (June 14–21) that honors the enduring legacy of African American resilience and the long journey toward freedom.

Commemorating at the Newest Historic Sites

The 2026 celebration is anchored by two major milestones on Nassau Street. Following its restoration, the Williamsburg Bray School—the oldest extant building in the U.S. dedicated to the education of Black children—is now fully open to the public. Visitors can explore the interior where enslaved and free children were taught in the 18th century. Nearby, Juneteenth marks the official dedication of the reconstructed African Baptist Meeting House. This site honors the original 18th-century home of the First Baptist Church, one of the country’s earliest Black congregations, which celebrates its own 250th anniversary in 2026.

Programming and Free Admission

On Thursday, June 19, 2026, Colonial Williamsburg continues its tradition of offering free admission to the Historic Area and the Art Museums. The day begins with a moving Sunrise Service under the Compton Oak, featuring keynote speakers and spiritual music. Throughout the day, guests can participate in:

  • “Answer the Call” Drum Circles: Immersive community drumming sessions that celebrate West African traditions.
  • Freedom’s Paradox Tours: Guided walks through the Peyton Randolph House that examine the lived experience of the 27 enslaved individuals who resided there.
  • Theatrical Performances: First-person portrayals in the Hennage Auditorium, such as A Taste of Freedom, which tells the story of those who sought refuge at Fort Monroe.

A Community-Wide Celebration

As a member of the Juneteenth Community Consortium, Colonial Williamsburg’s events are part of a larger regional celebration. From special Juneteenth-inspired menus at the King’s Arms Tavern to artisan demonstrations by Master Blacksmiths, the 2026 program invites the world to reflect on the full, honest, and inclusive story of the American experience.
