The Great American Birthday Quilt

Sharing Our Nation’s Story Through Colorful Craftwork

Written By Julie Matthews

During your visit, don’t miss the opportunity to view The Great American Birthday Quilt up close in person while it is on display at several locations in Williamsburg through the end of 2026. The Muscarelle Museum of Art at William & Mary, the Greater Williamsburg Sports & Events Center and the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center are showcasing sections of this nationally award-winning project, which was initiated as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

Behind The Great American Birthday Quilt is a collaboration between Visit Williamsburg and the Muscarelle Museum of Art, including Director of Engagement and Distinguished Artist in Residence Steve Prince who has led this remarkable community project. With an eclectic mix of vibrant quilt squares depicting a wide range of subjects—from flags and hearts to foods and characters—this project is much more than a work of art, it is a reflection of the people and places across America whom together are telling America’s story.

An unveiling of the completed quilt—measuring 500 feet long and featuring more than 2,000 quilt squares provided by contributors from all over the U.S.—was held in Colonial Williamsburg’s Merchants Square on April 11, 2026. After the celebration, the gigantic quilt was dissembled into sections to exhibit on a rotating basis at several locations throughout Williamsburg. These delightful exhibitions are a can’t miss for 2026. Admission to view The Great American Birthday Quilt is free and open to the public.
