York County Economic & Tourism Development is urging residents to keep their holiday spending local this season through its “Shop Local, Spread Cheer” campaign, running as part of Hampton Roads Buy Local Month from November 15 through December 15, 2025.

The initiative emphasizes the tangible impact of shopping locally, where every dollar spent with York County businesses directly supports local jobs, funds community improvements, and keeps neighborhoods thriving. According to Kristi Olsen-Hayes, director of Economic & Tourism Development, the campaign is about more than just transactions.
“This time of year is all about connection,” Olsen-Hayes said. “When you shop local, you’re not just checking something off a list—you’re helping a neighbor, supporting a dream and spreading cheer throughout our community.”
York County has cultivated a strong buy-local culture for over two decades, with both businesses and residents embracing the concept wholeheartedly. This community pride makes York County distinctive and economically resilient.
Small Business Saturday Takes Center Stage
A highlight of Buy Local Month is Small Business Saturday on November 29, the Saturday following Thanksgiving. This national celebration encourages residents to explore local shops, dine at independent restaurants, and book services from local entrepreneurs. American Express, the event’s sponsor, provides free promotional materials for participating businesses at their website.
Economic Impact and Community Benefits
Research demonstrates that supporting local businesses creates a multiplier effect, with dollars recirculating within the region to strengthen the local economy and create jobs. York County’s diverse selection of local businesses makes it convenient for residents to find unique gifts and family experiences without leaving town.
Getting Involved
Residents can participate in several ways. The county offers a Citizen Rewards discount program featuring participating local businesses, while the Buy Local Buzz quarterly email keeps subscribers informed about new openings, discounts, and special features like “Meet the Maker” and “Behind the Scenes” profiles.
Business owners can access free marketing resources, ideas, and grant funds through YesYorkCounty.com. The county encourages everyone to share their support on social media using #KeepItInYorkCounty and follow @YesYorkVA on Facebook.
