2024 Black Artist Showcase
Jamestown Settlement’s annual Black Artist Showcase will be on extended view throughout February 2024, connecting the past and present through vivid intersections of contemporary art and 17th-century history. The artworks, created by professional Virginia-based artists, celebrates modern African American life and culture.
The guiding theme for 2024 is “the beauty of our lives.” The theme, which is open to interpretation however the artist desires, is inspired by a passage from James Baldwin’s “The Fire Next Time.”
The Black Artist Showcase culminates February 24 with the “After Angelo” event named for one of the first African women in Jamestown’s historical record. This annual event reflects on the legacy of African diaspora through art, performance and community conversation.
