Award-Winning Films come to Williamsburg
Williamsburg is brimming with entertainment year-round. After the Halloween haunts and dazzling holiday festivities, save the date for Williamsburg’s answer to the Cannes Film Festival.
The William & Mary Global Film Festival (GFF) is four days of films, special guests, workshops and receptions right here in Williamsburg. The intimate festival offers festival goers exclusive access to some of the best films from around the world, as well as their filmmakers, actors, producers and more.
About the W&M Global Film Festival
The GFF began as a William & Mary festival featuring screenings of films from around the world, created by students and alumni. A decade later, the festival has transformed into an event that appeals to not just William & Mary students and alumni, but also cinephiles and Williamsburg visitors.
“We’ve featured many premiers and exclusives that allow people to see films that are not yet released,” says Adam Stackhouse, one of the festival’s producers.
Last year’s line up of films included: “Charm City,” “Assassination Nation,” “Paddington 2” and many more. According to Stackhouse, the films are selected by an oversight committee, along with alumni producers, student groups and groups of community members. They populate the festival with a wide range of films that span different interests and filmmaking styles.
In addition to the films, the GFF also allows attendees to attend conversations and workshops with professionals in the entertainment industry.
“It’s a really nice mix of providing access to films you may not be able to see anywhere else and the filmmakers attached to them, while also getting those conversations that are really great,” says Stackhouse.
The guest speakers, panels and workshops allow festival goers to interact and engage with those in the entertainment industry, including many William & Mary alumni. Last year’s speakers included writers, directors, producers, actors, costume designers and more that attended screenings of their own films or hosted workshops. Workshops give an insider’s look at the entertainment and filmmaking industry, teaching attendees about different aspects of the business.
