Kick Off the Holiday Season at Colonial Williamsburg’s Grand Illumination
There are several ways to celebrate the holiday season in Greater Williamsburg. Whether you attend a themed market, walk through a festive light display or pay a visit to Santa, there’s so much to see and do during the holidays in Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown. If you’re visiting Colonial Williamsburg in December, mark your calendar for the annual Grand Illumination.
Colonial Williamsburg Grand Illumination
On Sunday, Dec. 8, visit Colonial Williamsburg for a full day of special events culminating in a spectacular firework show during the Grand Illumination. The Grand Illumination is a tradition dating back centuries. In the 18th century, illuminations were used to celebrate major events by firing guns and lighting fireworks.
Colonial Williamsburg celebrates its Grand Illumination throughout the museum’s historic area. Take part in an array of events and activities happening at Colonial Williamsburg to celebrate the Grand Illumination.

Colonial Williamsburg Programming
Before the Grand Illumination begins, purchase a ticket to Colonial Williamsburg and experience the holiday-themed programming. Take a walking tour of the authentic 18th century Christmas decorations, hear traditional Christmas-season music or let a colonial resident teach you about the spirit of the Christmastide season.

Grand Illumination Entertainment
From 4–7 p.m., before the Grand Illumination fireworks, enjoy live entertainment on multiple stages around Colonial Williamsburg. This entertainment is free and open to the public.
Grand Illumination Fireworks
The Grand Illumination at Colonial Williamsburg will feature fireworks from three different locations around the Historic Area. Find your perfect place for viewing the fireworks at the Capitol, the Magazine and Governor’s Palace.
Viewing the fireworks is free and open to the public, beginning at 7 p.m. For $25 per person, you can receive Premium Fireworks Seating. This seating area at Palace Green offers the perfect place to view the Grand Illumination fireworks.
Grand Illumination Dining
Before or after the Grand Illumination, enjoy a special meal at one of Colonial Williamsburg’s restaurants. Shields Tavern, Christiana Campbell’s Tavern and King’s Arms Tavern will all host a Grand Illumination Dinner. Advanced reservations are required for these dinners.
