Celebrate Thanksgiving the Colonial Way

The holiday season offers plenty of one-of-a-kind experiences in Greater Williamsburg. For Thanksgiving, learn about the historic culinary traditions of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries during Food & Feasts of Colonial Virginia.

Food & Feasts of Colonial Virginia

Food & Feasts of Colonial Virginia is a weekend-long Thanksgiving event at Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. From Nov. 28–30, guests can visit one or both museums to learn about the foodways of Virginia’s residents, from the Powhatan Indians to the English colonists.

Food & Feasts at Jamestown Settlement

Jamestown Settlement is Jamestown’s living-history museum dedicated to 17th century Virginia history and culture. During Food & Feasts of Colonial Virginia, Jamestown Settlement will teach guests how food was gathered, preserved and prepared by the colonists and Powhatan Indians in the 1600s. There will be cooking demonstrations throughout the day at Jamestown Settlement’s on-site attractions.

Visit the recreated Powhatan Indian village where venison, turkey and other game meats are roasted over an open fire. See how the Powhatan Indians would prepare their harvest for a Thanksgiving meal. Learn about the variety of dishes prepared and the tools they’d make to prepare their meals.

At the recreated 1610-14 Fort, guests can learn about how the English colonists prepared food when they arrived to Virginia. Jamestown Settlement’s historical interpreters will be baking fresh bread all weekend long. They will also demonstrate the open-hearth cooking based on historical recipes from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Thanksgiving Dinner at Jamestown Settlement

Celebrate Thanksgiving Day at Jamestown Settlement with dinner at the Jamestown Settlement Café. Dinner will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, from 11 a.m.–4 p.m.

Food & Feasts at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown

Food and Feasts of Colonial Virginia American Revolution Museum

The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown tells the story of this nation’s founding leading up to and following the Revolutionary War. Visit the museum’s recreated Continental Army Encampment to discover how the soldiers rationed and ate their food. There will also be daily artillery drills, which are how the soldiers earned their rations.

At the museum’s recreated Revolution-era farm, visitors can watch as historical interpreters bring their crops in from the fields and garden to create stews, pies, breads and more. Dishes will be prepared in the farm kitchen using 18th century open-hearth cooking techniques and recipes.
